Emily Catherine Thomas plays the SCC Coffeehouse

On Thursday, February 18th, the SSB auditorium was once again home to the  SCC coffeehouse and open-mike night. With a dozen people in attendance, one performer bravely stood up and performed, guitar in hand, her very own, original music.

Emily Catherine Thomas, who had only performed once before in the spring, stood up on stage and played her debut song from last time, ‘I'm doing fine without you'.

"It's awesome that my life is starting to come together and do well" she told me, after her performance.

Emily has been playing and singing music for a long time, and her love for music goes all the way back to the day of her birth. "My dad sang to me when my mom was still pregnant. He sang ‘Yellow Submarine' to me. The day I was born he got to hold me for the first time, I was all crying and stuff, and he started singing ‘Yellow Submarine' and I stopped crying and looked at him. I recognized his voice."

Originally Emily had planned on performing three songs, but her act was cut short after the second song so those in attendance could take a break and stretch their legs. However, she was told she could go back on and perform her last song after the audience came back.

Here for the first time was Christian Lewis, who performed Haiku he had written for his Creative Writing class. He was urged to perform by his teacher. "I wrote three Haiku's I had to write for my class. They were kind of based on my own experiences. I really love outdoors. I love nature."

Lewis spoke to the audience before he read his Haiku, saying he was nervous. But the crowd cheered for him when he was done. He had obviously won them over. "Oh, I was so nervous. But all in all I thought it went pretty well."

"I'd like to do anything with literature or English.

With a dozen people in attendance, the SCC Coffeehouse and open-mike night was a success. And for Emily, this is only the beginning.

"I really would like to … well obviously I plan to get noticed by somebody […] I have my myspace up, and my friends spreading the word, and I'm on face book. So hopefully getting more people to notice my music."

You can see more of Emily's music on her myspace page at myspace.com/emilycatherinethomas. Next SCC Coffeehouse is Friday, April 16th at 7pm. You can bet Emily will be there, and seeing as it's free, so should you.
