Bobby D and his wacky advertisements

There were no sleepers at this past Open Mic night at the community college. The Social Science Building stage was filled with many different kinds of lively and talented performers, and an even more lively audience. The show started off with quite an unexpected bang with an aviator goggle wearing, mustache sporting man throwing around an evil doll that was dubbed ‘the ugliest baby'.

Bobby Dangerous, or Bobby D as his friends call him, has been doing these kinds of comedy skits for 16 years, each time doing an advertisement for a silly service. Sometimes an exaggerated version of an ad pulled straight from the yellow pages.

When asked where he got his inspiration for his off the wall comedy, he explained, "Definitely my past heroes: Red Skeleton, Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams. They've influenced me a lot."

This time around, for his 320th performance, he did a commercial for a faux airline company. Between the ugliest baby doll being thrown around, the assurance that the airline is pretty sure your plane wont crash, and the mustache, I really had no idea what was going on.

It was a great performance nonetheless. One that you had to see to believe. Bobby D has attended every Coffee House to date and doesn't plan on missing any future ones.

"The neat thing about the Coffee House is that it gives people something to do besides watching TV. You get to see stuff here you never see elsewhere, and some of these people are going to be famous one day, believe it or not. Everybody starts out at events like this."

Another interesting piece was performed by a man that who went by the name of Marley Johnson. Instead of reading poetry, he decided to tell an exciting childhood story from long ago, voicing each character of the story with their own respective voice.

"Well, I like to tell my stories, and for this here event at the community college I decided to go and tell my favorite one." The story revealed the time when a friend and he stumbled upon a body in a creek, and the series of events between the two that lead to them helping the police finding the killer. In the end they were rewarded with becoming honorary sheriffs for the day.

"I like the story cause it's got a good message to it. Sometimes when you take risks, you get to be sheriff for the day, and that's pretty cool."

The highlight of the night had to have been the performance by young aspiring singer/songwriter Emily Thomas. Emily has been playing guitar for almost four years and starting getting into songwriting last October after a tough break up.

"It's definitely been like therapy for me. I mean I've always loved music, but this was definitely my way of getting over my last relationship. Whenever I write music, it's all me; I don't write fluff. I write through my emotions."

Her powerful lyrics and skillful strumming made for a great performance and perhaps a foreshadowing of the future. She's currently in the works of making her first CD, and she's excited and hopeful that she will soon get her first gig.

"You're best at what you dream" said the great Bobby D.

If Emily keeps at what she's doing with the passion and energy behind her dreams, who knows where she'll end up. They say you can build a brighter future at the community college. Maybe one day she can look back at this place as one of the places she got her start.
